|In doing the simple act of making action purposeful, we have the necessary tool of awareness which makes all things possible, including stopping bad habits. Yet beyond stopping bad habits, replace them with others that you know are positive for you.One example is meditation, which leads to a myriad of potential positive outcomes, including the necessary release from stress and the resulting phenomenal physical and emotional level healing.

Though the exact time parameters this article gives of 7 years regarding the long-lasting nature of the healing benefits of meditation are not well documented in it, the idea behind it is still very sound and is the foundation principle of all Medical Qigong practices: where your mind goes, your energy follows…and manifests on the physical. The positive impact that occurs from meditation goes well beyond just the current moment you are meditating, and the more positive thought or time spent by us in a state of stillness/non-stress, the better and longer the healing results. Through meditation, one can either focus their dozens of random thoughts down to one thought or intention, or they can release their mind entirely from all thought, allowing their energy to reconsolidate and be used by the body. Even if we don’t know exactly what our body needs, the body has its own innate wisdom for healing itself when it is simply given the space or internal environment it needs for that healing to occur. Instead of using your energy for worry or frustration or any other thought which “exists” in the past or the future, give that energy back to your body for it to use for you to heal or stay healthy. Let your mind and your body exist in the same time: this moment, then hold that space either in focused intention or in stillness. This is the simple practice of meditation and amazing things will happen. Do this as a habit, and not just as an occasional practice, even if it is for only 10-15 minutes a day, and its potential only increases.
Thousands of Years of Theory…
Medical Qigong, the mother of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and all its branches, deeply understands the effects of stress on the body. For over 5000 years it has developed and refined methods of not only combating the physical manifestations of stress but also preventing the negative effects of common self-inflicted mental stress. Medical Qigong teaches dynamic movements and meditations that integrate posture, breath, and mental focus. These mind-body practices provide one with the essential awareness and tools for enhancing their ability to heal themselves and prevent illness.
The “fight or flight” response is often thought of as an involuntary response to our external environment, sending us into an action for the purposes of self-preservation. However, TCM understands that this response, when left in an unconscious state, can become a habitually chronic behavior that has a very real and tremendously detrimental effect on our health. This chronic state extends from the event itself and into our mental state afterward. Following a stressful event, one will often mentally recreate the moment innumerable times, causing far greater levels of emotional and physical stress than even the original event itself did.
…Confirmed by Modern Western Science
A study conducted in 2016 by the University of Pittsburgh identified significant neural connections between the cerebral cortex and the adrenal medulla. Its findings provided more scientific evidence of “…how stress, depression and other mental states can alter organ function, and show that there is a real anatomical basis for psychosomatic illness.”
This study also proved that people have physical level responses from simply thinking about a stressful event. Therefore, even in the absence of an immediate external environmental event, through mental activity alone one can trigger their body into a “fight or flight” response. It is shown in these findings that in an unconscious and undisciplined state, the mind has the ability to create high levels of day to day stress.
Qigong provides people with methods of shifting their responses to the conscious level, mitigating the effects of unavoidable stress, and taking control of daily mental habits that impact health.

As we take a full turn into the winter season, remember there are many preventative actions you can take to stay healthy.
Here are a couple tips:
Protecting Yourself from Cold Weather Invasions
Cover the back of your neck when going outside, even for short durations. Regardless of whether you feel cold while you are outside, this time of year always strive to protect your neck from external environmental conditions.
Also, warm the face after returning indoors and consider taking a hot shower before bed to help remove any subtle cold pathogens remaining on the face and body.
There are acupuncture points located on the back of your neck that when exposed to wind can cause what TCM calls a wind invasion, resulting in all the same to similar symptoms of a viral cold (e.g. muscle aches, sore throat, chills), only without a virus.
Simple Homemade Ginger Tea
It may be the most overlooked solution, however, one way to combat the winter cold is through the stomach.
In the summer, ginger root is used to promote healthy spleen and stomach function. In the winter, ginger root can also be used to help release the exterior, a TCM term used to describe the removal of environmental factors (pathogens) such as wind and cold from the surface of the skin. This prevents the pathogens from remaining on the skin and eventually penetrating into deeper tissue levels and causing greater illness.
1) Ginger root can be sliced thinly and simmered for about 20 min in a covered pot of water to extract it.
2) Here is a 5-10 min method for making ginger tea:
– Grate 1-2 tablespoons of ginger root and put in the bottom of a large drinking mug.
– Pour about 16oz of boiling water directly over it.
– Cover and let steep for 3-5 minutes.
– Strain. (Optional: save the ginger and repeat the steeping process one more time with it. Combine both steepings).
– Dilute to drink: for 4 ounces of ginger tea, pour 2 ounces of the steeped and strained ginger water into a cup and dilute with 2 ounces of plain hot water. For 8oz of ginger tea, double these amounts.
– Add a little raw honey if desired.
– Drink 4-8oz in the morning or evening before bed, daily.
Passion and fulfillment are all too often overshadowed by stress. This can be even more so during the holiday season and some end up dreading the rut holidays have become, making them feel more drawn down than reinvigorated.
Learning to restore balance to your health is rooted in first learning that each moment in your life, and what you choose to do with it, is significant. Each moment is either compounding your stress levels and therefore health imbalances, or it is an opportunity for allowing your body to heal. What decides this is more your choice than you may realize and this article is all about regaining a perspective that empowers you to heal.
For nearly all of our clients and students over the years, there are two primary reasons for holiday stress: uncomfortable family circumstances and the sense of too little time for all of the additional demands. This month we will bring to light several family dynamics and their impact on us, discussing important healing methods for regaining True Control and liberation from the perception of the “rut” and establishing vital perceptions necessary for whole body health.
